I’m thinking of presenting some questions to the staff at my school to see how close we are to a hedgehog concept. Here are my iterations of the three questions:
- What do you love to teach? (Be specific)
- What could our school do better than any of other school in the world?
- What could we do to make people want to give us money?
The trick is in the ask. I don’t want to simply throw it out at a staff meeting, and a Google form seems a little bland. I have this sense that packaging the questions in the right ways might really spark the imaginations of the teachers, administrators, and support personnel. The right ask might initiate dialog in addition to collecting data.
Any ideas on how I might creatively survey 50+ educators?
Hey brother,
I’d try to contextualize the approach in some sort of narrative. Use the story of an admirable organization that has been successful with this approach and highlight what process that got them there. Emphasize the results they achieved and how the same types of successes could be true of your school. Also, talk about the types of people that are a part of the organization and what characteristics really pushed them forward towards success. That’s what I’ve got, I’ll be interested to see what others have to say.
Hmmm… I’ll have to look around for a school that is doing this. There are plenty of examples in Collins’s book, but they’re all businesses, and presenting business ideas to teachers would be a trainwreck, I think.
I think you are on the right track in realizing that presentation is key. Here is one idea:
1) Use Animoto to present Hedgehog concept and the three questions.
2) Include the three questions again at the end, and this time stop after each one.
3) Staff uses an index card to answer each question at the stopping points.
Share the results at a later date.
I hope you’ll share what you finally decide!
How about a wiki page where everyone can add to the discussion. Post the question at the top of the page. Then let people add their answers below as a discussion about the question. Maybe a prize drawing for all the people who contributed to the discussion by a certain date?
